Early on Wednesday afternoon, Norfolk Police responded to a vehicle theft in progress.
The suspect, later identified as Keenan Talton, age 22, of Norfolk, had entered the victim’s vehicle near 7th Street and Madison Avenue, and drove away.
According to Capt. Mike Bauer, the victim saw the theft and, using a second vehicle, followed the stolen vehicle to the 500 block of South 2nd Street where it stopped.
Talton exited the stolen vehicle, approached the victim and handed him the keys.
He then walked south before being confronted by the responding officers.
Keenan was in the middle of a bad reaction to the drug, making the situation unpredictable and difficult. Despite this, officers worked to deescalate and ensure his safety. Unfortunately, this is a challenge we face far too often. Drugs like meth don’t just lead to criminal activity. They also put users in dangerous, unpredictable states.
Talton was taken into custody. In a subsequent search, officers recovered a glass pipe and methamphetamine.
He was arrested for theft by unlawful taking and possession of a controlled substance.
