Santa Ana, California — October 1, 2026 — The Santa Ana Police Department is reviewing the use of force during the arrest of 28-year-old Florentino Lopez. The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m., according to Lopez’s attorney, John Kremer. The video shows Lopez standing near a police vehicle before an officer pulls him to the ground. Additional officers subsequently assist in restraining him. Police Chief Robert Rodriguez said he personally reviewed the video. He stated that the department is conducting a comprehensive review that includes body-worn-camera recordings, police reports and the circumstances leading to the arrest. Chief Rodriguez said the department would allow the review process to determine the facts and conclusions. Santa Ana Mayor Valerie Amezcua said she contacted the city manager and police chief regarding the incident and would continue monitoring the investigation. Criminal history and charges: Lopez was charged October 5 with a felony count of resisting arrest, a misdemeanor count of resisting a peace officer, a misdemeanor charge marijuana use near a school or daycare center, and an infraction, he was a pedestrian in a roadway outside a crosswalk. He pleaded not guilty. His attorney said Lopez is on felony probation and subject to search conditions. Lopez remained in custody following the October 1 arrest, and bail was set at $20,000. His next court appearance was scheduled for October 13 at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.
